250 Hasmonean Boys + 15 organisations + JVN = 1,000 volunteering hours and an amazing social action day!

A couple of Friday’s ago I went – along with Zippy – all around North West London to see pupils from Hasmonean High School for Boys volunteer for their first ever Volunteering Day.  I’m not exaggerating to say what an amazing sight it was to see some of the 250 boys volunteer in a variety of locations and activities.

JVN was approached two months ago by the enrichment professionals at Hasmonean Boys who wanted to dedicate an entire Friday to volunteering as part of their Activity Week.  My special agents Zippy and Myriam were immediately on the case.  Finding numerous volunteering opportunities for such a young age group was challenging, but we managed to find 15 strong opportunities based on a real social or environmental aspect.

The charities included Belmont FarmLondon School of Jewish StudiesAssociation of Jewish RefugeesAll AboardKisharonGift and the Jewish Cultural Centre (JCC) among many others.

The students has a lot of fun taking care of the animals at Belmont Farm, located in Mill Hill, others painted and did some gardening at the London School of Jewish Studies in Hendon.  Another group cleaned the Peace Garden, which is an allotment located next to JCC’s offices in Hampstead.  Residents of the Lady Sarah Cohen Home were thrilled to receive a visit from some of the students, who run activities and visited the elderly.  I officially schepped nachas over the 1,000 volunteering hours achieved and – more importantly – seeing the boys hard at work and experiencing the benefits of giving of their time and their energy to help others.

What can we learn from such a fun day? That you’re never too young to start volunteering.  And that establishing a social conscience in these young teenagers will make them want to volunteer later on in life.

I am happy and proud to report that this operation will most likely take place next year, thanks to popular demand from the students, so thank you students for participating, and thank you teachers for organising such a great and positive day for all.

As one of the teachers involved in accompanying a group to Gift,I can say that the Friday was a real success and what’s more should be “sold ” to all Jewish secondary schools. This should not just be a one day a year thing but should become part and parcel of each school’s life. Very well done JVN.
